A delightful hike in Saumane-de-Vaucluse, Provence

Go hiking in Saumane-de-Vaucluse and see signs of how people adapted their surroundings in the distant past: calades, restanques, bories, drystone huts and cave dwellings.

Things you'll need for the hike:
- Good walking shoes
- A bottle of water
- The Terra Rando trail description which you can pick up from the Tourist Office or download on your smartphone.

From 1 July to 15 September, check the risk level by calling 04 28 31 77 11 before setting off on the hike.

Enjoy a pleasant hike between bories and restanques in Saumane-de-Vaucluse. Admire the splendid views of the Alpilles, the Luberon and the Rhône Valley along the way.

Setting off from the Château of Sade Saumane, you will take a four-kilometre walking trail. The difficulty level of this route is easy to medium and it is usually nice and shady. It takes you to see some amazing drystone walls and cobblestone paths that were made by people in the past. Half-way along the route, you will come to a remarkable cave dwelling.

Watch out! At stage five of the walking trail, after you pass the restanques (path lined with drystone retaining walls), don't take the paved road but, instead, the track on your left. There is a rope across it, but you can use it nevertheless.

If you're not too tired at the end of the walk, take the opportunity to visit the village of Saumane. Admire the pretty washhouses and spend a quiet moment drinking in the superb view over the plain planted with pine and olive trees and other typical Mediterranean plants.

From July to September, you can even visit the fabulous Château of Saumane, that once belonged to the Sade family. Perched atop a craggy rock, it almost seems to beckon you.

Practical Information:

- Elevation: 164 m.
