There is no need to travel for miles to appreciate the beauty of the landscapes of Provence. The Lavender Route, a stone's throw from L'Isle sur la Sorgue, in the town of Thor, keeps all its promises.
Far from the hustle and bustle, you will appreciate this sublime alternative to discovering Lavender, near your home or your place of visit. A stone's throw from L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, there are no less than 250 hectares of lavender and lavandin waiting to be captured on your cameras.
The history of lavender in Thor dates back to the 2010s. At this period, traditional productions became complicated between irrigation problems and loss of yield. When it was necessary to react, at first 3, then 11 farmers came together to come up with a crazy idea: to plant lavender!
Nothing was won in advance, because lavender is usually only expressed at altitudes between 700 and 800 meters above sea level. But the crazier the idea, the more beautiful the project is! With a draining and calcareous soil, the Sorgue everywhere under our feet which brings freshness to the soil, after a few scares, lavender finally takes root in Thor. A successful bet for these combined farmers who, in addition to innovating, offer an eco-responsible project because lavender does not require watering or treatments.
What better than a brand to promote the work of these men and women who actively participate in the history of lavender in Provence. Originally, two men, Luc Barbenson and Yves Bayon de Noyer, who propelled their adventure and now offered finished products available to all. The essential oil extracted from this precious plant is then valorized into a finished product to appreciate all its quintessence.
It is important to distinguish between lavender and lavandin. True lavender, known as Lavandula angustifolia, is renowned for its high-quality essential oil. Its delicate fragrance and soothing properties make it an ingredient of choice for aromatherapy and skin care.

In contrast, lavandin, or Lavandula x intermedia, is a natural hybrid of true lavender and aspic lavender. More robust and with a higher yield, lavandin is often grown for its advantageous economic properties. Its essential oil, although less popular than that of true lavender, is widely used in cosmetics, household products and even for the manufacture of soaps and detergents.
Of these plantations present in Thor, part is grown in lavandin and another in lavender. These two complementary varieties, both visual and olfactory, each bring their own identity.
What better time than June to enjoy the most beautiful lavender spots close to L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. It is during this period, which is still peaceful, that the plant expresses itself at its best and reveals its “lavender” color that even purple is not enough to describe as it is so atypical. If you prefer the month of July, a good idea too, but before the 14th of the month because the harvests are done during the first two weeks. If you are lucky, when the harvest is in progress, the ambient scent is just magical and awakens all your senses.
Every year on July 13, come back to Lavandissima, the unmissable event around Lavender, organized by Scent of Sorgues and the city of Thor.
