A bit of history

The Château de Fontsegugne was one of the most important sites in Provençal history before becoming, in 2000, a private winery.

Built on the Campbeau plateau, the building was, in the 19th century, the property of the Giéra family. Here, a group of young poets of Provençal expression met, including Frédéric Mistral.

In May 1854, they founded Le Félibrige, an institution designed to restore the Provençal language to its former glory.

Fifty years later, in 1904, Frédéric Mistral received one of the first Nobel Prizes in Literature and, even today, Félibrige continues to pursue the objectives set a century and a half earlier within the grounds of Fontsegugne Castle.
