The “Step to the side” says the Backpacker's Guide

We love this new way of experiencing the region, at Isle sur la Sorgue Tourisme! It is also up to us to invite you to enjoy Fontaine-de-Vaucluse in the evening. We see so many benefits! Far from the heat or the tourist flow of the day, in the evening, Fontaine-de-Vaucluse regains its former soul, a true typical Provençal village, where calm and serenity will transport you to the source. Follow the guide!

An emblematic village

Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is a village very well known for the existence of its source which springs up at the foot of a cliff over 300m high. This small village also has other treasures such as museums, a Romanesque church, a paper mill, the ruins of a castle, but also some simply excellent restaurants!

The Sorgue river originates at the source of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. From the village, you then have to go up it, along the emerald green river, to reach the “fountain”. You will love strolling along this fresh river that will never cease to surprise and amaze you. The tranquil river and the preserved nature create a relaxing harmony, and this perfect combination provides (we assure you) immediate well-being!

This chasm is the most important resurgent source in Europe and its waters come from the rains and snowmelt of Mont Ventoux, the Monts de Vaucluse, the Albion plateau and the Montagne de Lure. They feed an underground spring, which suddenly emerges and springs up through the Fontaine-de-Vaucluse chasm.

Our tips for a good evening!

The ideal is to be on site around 18:30! Once parked in one of the village's car parks, we invite you to go directly to the center of the village where there is a column erected in 1804 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Petrarch's birth. At the time, the village was the site of a literary and romantic pilgrimage that attracted the greatest talents in French literature, such as Lamartine, Chateaubriand, Stendhal or Georges Sand. Very close to this square you will also see the Saint-Véran-Sainte-Marie Church, classified as a Historical Monument, was built on the ruins of a pagan temple.

Once done, head for the source or the abyss! Continue along the Chemin de la Fontaine, and it is by following the Sorgue that you will come across it!
After this short walk, we encourage you to go for a walk on the other bank of the Sorgue. To do this, head to the François Pétrarque Museum and cross the small porch that precedes its entrance. You will thus access a small but very pleasant and bucolic park that will offer you a magnificent view of the castle and will allow you to access a small island.

At the end of your charming walk, you will not resist discovering the many restaurants that are at your disposal to enjoy yourself!

We already want to come back...

Its lush vegetation, its vertiginous cliffs that surround it, the charm of its buildings, its paddle wheels rotating at the rhythm of the current and this incredible and omnipresent green water that flows throughout the village offer an invigorating breath of air that young and old will love!
