Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges – L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

The 12th-century St. Lawrence Basilica became the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges in the 13th century. Later renovated, it is now a fine example of Baroque style.

Thanks to its sumptuous interior, the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is an outstanding monument. It is one of the most important witnesses to the Baroque style in southern France.

When you first look at the sober façade of this extraordinary monument, you could not possibly imagine the sumptuousness inside the church: large canvases by master artists, statues, murals, carved woodwork, a magnificent 15-metre-tall altarpiece adorning the whole choir and 222 figures of angels to accompany Mary to Heaven.

The 15th-century Mentasti organ is classified as a historic monument.

Built in the 13th century, the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue was completely rebuilt between the 15th and 17th centuries. It is simultaneously one of the last Comtat Gothic structures (chevet), one of the rare local constructions in Renaissance style (bell tower) and one of the most remarkable Baroque ensembles in Provence.
