UNESCO Sites

There are three Roman sites in Provence that are classed as UNESCO world heritage: the Roman theatre and the triumphal arch in Orange and the Roman amphitheatre in Arles.

Standing right in the centre of Orange, the Roman theatre is incredibly well-preserved and the acoustics are excellent.

Indeed, this magnificent setting is used as the venue for the annual Chorégies d'Orange, an opera and classical music festival that is renowned the world over.

Conquered by the Romans in the 1st century BC, Provence has inherited a vast legacy of ancient architectural heritage. A major component of the region's history and identity, these remains have become an inextricable feature of the scenery and local culture.
