Antique Theatre - Vaison-la-Romaine

Vaison la Romaine exhibits one of the largest archaeological sites in the Vaucluse open sky. Discover this exceptional site full of history and Roman remains.

The Antique Theatre of Vaison-la-Romaine would date from the 1st century AD. It is estimated that the stage wall rose to 25 m, was 8 m deep and 23 m wide.

In 1912, many sculptures were discovered in the pits of the ancient theater. They are now kept at the Théo Desplans Museum in Vaison-la-Romaine.

The monument can accommodate 5,000 spectators sitting on the stands.

Classified as a Historical Monument, the Théâtre Antique de Vaison-la-Romaine hosts various shows, including the Festival Vaison Dances and concerts organized as part of the Choralies of Vaison-la-Romaine.

The Theo Desplans Museum of Orange

The Theo Desplans Museum is located in the area of the remains of the hill of Puymin. Various objects found on the archaeological sites of the city are exhibited at the Théo Desplans Museum. The latter testify to the daily life of the Gallo-Romans. In particular, you can see jewelry, ceramics, objects of worship, funeral furniture, as well as decorations: decorative elements, frescoes and the mosaic of the Villa du Paon. A visit to the museum will also allow you to discover the imperial statues of Hadrian and Sabine found during excavations undertaken in the ancient theatre.
