Avignon, City of the Popes

Just 25 kilometres from L'Isle sur la Sorgue, the city of Avignon is home to an array of must-see historic monuments including the famous bridge and the Palace of the Popes.

Attracted by its pleasant living conditions and strategic location on the banks of the Rhône, the Popes chose to set up residence in Avignon in the 16th century. In the space of a few years, the peaceful little town evolved into the 'City of the Popes', the most important town in all of Christendom.

Avignon's urban landscape is awe-inspiring. Overlooking the city and the River Rhône, the Rocher des Doms affords an outstanding panorama of the historic monuments: the Saint-Bénezet Bridge, the ramparts, the Little Palace, the Doms Cathedral and the impressive walls flanked by the four huge towers of the Palace of the Popes. This unique architectural ensemble was classed at World Heritage by UNESCO in 1995.
