The Roman Amphitheatre of Arles

The Amphitheatre or “Arena” of Arles, is the most important monument of the ancient Roman colony a few millennia after its construction.

Its architecture is entirely designed in relation to its vocation as a venue for great shows, welcoming many audiences.

In their initial elevation, the bleachers could receive approximately 21,000 spectators, whose flows were expertly organized by a network of gates, galleries and stairs, on several floors.

Since the beginning of the Middle Ages became a veritable closed and fortified city, the Amphitheatre of Arles was not released until the 19th century.

The building then regained, in part, its initial function, particularly with bullfighting, which earned it its current name of “arenas” of Arles.

Today it is the most visited city monument, thus carrying the image of Arles all over the world.

The Amphitheatre of Arles, which probably dates back to the end of the 1st century, measures 136 metres by 107 meters. The 69 metres by 40 meters arenas were separated from the stands by a protective wall and covered with a floor that housed machinery, cages, and behind the scenes.
