Blachère Foundation - Apt

Since 2004, the Fondation Jean-Paul Blachère à Apt wants to participate in the development of Africa by helping contemporary creation and the promotion of its artists.

Promote and support artists from the African continent

Presentation

The Blachère Foundation in Apt is an unusual place to say the least: through its action to promote and support artistic creation on the African continent, it offers visitors the opportunity to discover emerging or internationally renowned artists, whose talent often disputes with social, political and ecological commitment. For this reason, the Blachère Foundation's exhibitions have become must-see in the cultural agenda.

History

Launched in 2003, the Fondation Jean-Paul Blachère, supports more than 200 artists from the African continent and the diaspora. It offers exhibitions and welcomes artists in residence. It also organizes creative workshops in Africa and Europe, and participates in major African biennials. The Foundation relays on the long-standing efforts of institutions, collectors, gallery owners, critics, and journalists.

Programming

The exhibitions organized at the Foundation can take several forms: monographs (Yseut Digan, Yinka Shonibare and Wim Botha are among the artists whose work has recently been exhibited at Apt), grouped or themed (by medium, such as photography or sculpture, or notional, such as “Fuir” or “Feminities”). The foundation's shop supports the work of African artisans and designers through a selection of original products and the highlighting of two countries (renewed every year). The bookstore is a small documentation centre inviting curiosity, especially of young audiences.
