The Ochre Deposits of the Luberon

Stretching for nearly 25 km, the Luberon's ochre deposits are a unique classified and protected site in France. Marvel at the breathtaking scenery in Provence's 'Colorado'.

The Luberon's Ochre Deposits, a Provençal treasure

More than two hundred million years ago, Provence was covered by water. As a result of climate change, the ocean withdrew, leaving behind the ochre sand we are so familiar with.

Worthy of the palettes of the greatest painters, the ochre deposits of the Luberon come in over 24 shades, ranging from soft and gentle yellow to intense and contrasting reddish brown.

The ochre deposits bestow their colours on the land of the Luberon, in shades of red, yellow and purple, even when the sun sets, contrasting magnificently with the blue of the sky and nature's greenery.
